One’s Co-Religionist Is Far More Precious Than a Necklace of Diamonds
When the co-religionist, who had met Amichand after many, many years, saw the terrible financial plight of Amichand, he spontaneously took off his extremely expensive diamond necklace and gifted it to Amichand, in order to help him tide over his current impecunious circumstance. This amply demonstrates that for him, his co-religionist was infinitely more valuable than the diamond necklace. Most people are deeply attached to material wealth, but if one becomes even more attached to his co-religionists, his attachment to material wealth decreases considerably. Most people claim that they are extremely fond of their co-religionists, and indeed of the entire Jain community. The litmus test for this love is, if one comes across his co-religionists who are struggling to secure two square meals a day, can he overcome the attachment for his wealth and possessions to help the co-religionist out? If one passes this test, he can truthfully claim that he loves his co-religionists.
Many people claim to love their co-religionists and their preceptor monks, but how many would correct themselves and apologise if through their actions of mind, speech and body, a co-religionist or monk were to be harmed in the slightest way? Most people would refuse to apologise or mend their ways, instead preferring to live in their own bubble of egoism. It would be of no concern to them if their acts of mind, speech and body were to cause grief or rise in passions or sorrow to their co-religionists or to monks. In such cases, it may be stated that their love for themselves, their image and their position in society outweighs their love for co-religionists and monks.
The sad fact is that they do not even feel an iota of regret in their own hearts for having hurt a co-religionist or monk; apologising to the person they have harmed is a distant dream. Such people are vulnerable to mithyaatva 66, as they do not regret their sins. They remain firm in their deluded belief that their conduct is fair and just. In reality, their conduct may be completely inappropriate, but they are incapable of realising the fact because of their excessive pride and arrogance. In reality, they love only themselves, their ego and their material wealth.
Anyone who wishes to escape this trap of egoism should spend time serving the community, co-religionists and learned monks. It is very difficult to attain access to the trio of religion, co-religionist and monks. The one who is fortunate enough to be able to gain access to them should cherish this opportunity and make the best use of it. Those who realise the importance of this trio are overjoyed to be able to serve them in any manner possible. This is why the travelling co-religionist gifted his precious diamond necklace to Amichand.
Only the person who has the courage to confront his own ego and wealth by saying “Who are you? You are far less important to me than my co-religionists; if I
